It was a two nightclub weekend for me, which is highly unusual now that I'm in my 30's (early 30's, thank you, I'll be turning 33 again in February.) Seeing Madonna was thrilling, yes, but the inconvenience attached to the experience detracted a lot from my enjoyment of it. Friday night, however, a dear friend (and my editor at Circuit Noize magazine, which got us whisked right into the club for free) and I ventured into heterosexual territory at Crobar to see one of our favorite DJ's, Sander Kleinenberg. Isn't he a cutie?
I've been a dance music afficionado for over a decade now, and I have never encountered a DJ who combines as much raw talent, energy and old school utopian dancefloor vibes as this young savant from Holland. After spending too much time and money flirting with our beautiful bartender AJ and downing shots of Patron (shots are a safer bet in a club that charges $13 for a cocktail), Sander went on about 2:30 and the tepid dancefloor came to life. Filled with music dorks, sleazy guidos, and too many asians that seemed to be overdosing on something, the room was obviously completely under his skilled control. Interesting sidenote: cigarettes are the new drug on the dancefloor. Everyone is smoking with abandon, looking around warily as if they're sticking something in their noses instead. Bloomberg made cigarettes naughty and fun again!
A deeply funky progressive house maelstrom hit us like a ton of bricks, as he cranked up the volume and got to work. 6 hours later, I remembered what it felt like to go completely wobbly in the legs from dancing until you almost drop. And the look on the trainspotters' faces was, justifiably, just as awe-filled as the one on everyone's face last night seeing Madonna.
Check out Sander's current releases (I would recommend the Everybody series in particular), and look for his tour album coming on Nov. 7. If you love good electronic music, you won't be disappointed.

Aatom, you have so much talent it drives me crazy! I love you so much. Thank you for being in my life. I had the *best* time as well and I can't wait to go hear Sander again with you!
