There's some sort of buzz about The Village Voice being sold to the New Times chain of newspapers, and budgets and salaries are being slashed in the process. I was mildly shocked to learn that people at the Voice get paid at all.
But the real story here is the strange confluence in editorial coverage of this story on Gawker and Fishbowl NY:
Gawker: "Staffers don’t know what, exactly, is happening, but perhaps that’s because all the email negotiations have been double super-secret secured, thus preventing the leak of any details."
FishbowlNY: "A double super-secret FishbowlNY source at a New Times paper says that it's "the elephant in the room"; another double super-secret source tried to do a story on it himself and said "it was 'no comments' across the board"; "EIC Don Forst, who we've heard from a number of (also double-super-secret) sources is not the most popular pen in the newsroom, announced the cuts, which are substantial..."
I think we just witnessed a snarky media meme jump the shark. Matt Cooper can have his joke back now.
Update: Rachel from FishbowlNY was sweet enough to email me back (and link to me!) to say that she had noticed the bloggy synergy as well. As usual, I kid because I love, and I'm a huge fan of the site. It's so much better than that other media gossip site, which didn't bother returning my email.
